Koopa Klaus (alter ego)
From the Super Mario Wiki
“Christmas? Bah, humkoop!”
—Koopa Klaus
Koopa Klaus was the titular alter ego employed by King Koopa in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode "Koopa Klaus". Dressed up like Santa Claus, Koopa Klaus desired to ruin Christmas by destroying any toys he came across, and by freezing Santa's workshop so that Santa would be unable to deliver any of his presents. Koopa Klaus' main mode of transportation was a black sleigh with a green K on it, which was pulled around by two Albatoss that wore bicycle handles in lieu of reindeer.
[edit] History
After destroying assorted toys in a crushing machine within his icy castle near the North Pole, Koopa Klaus set out to freeze Santa's workshop. After Randolph the Red-Nosed Tryclyde alerted Koopa Klaus that Ice Bombs had been loaded on his sleigh, Koopa Klaus boarded the sleigh and made his way towards Santa's workshop. On his way to the workshop, Koopa Klaus flew over Mario's group and ordered his Albatoss to drop Bob-ombs at them to slow the quartet down. Not wanting to waste any more time, Koopa Klaus continued to Santa's workshop and successfully froze the entire place with his Ice Bombs.
Before leaving, Koopa Klaus abducted Santa and made him his hostage just as Mario's group arrived at the workshop. Once Koopa Klaus took off in his sleigh, Luigi used a see-saw in the Elves' playground to launch an ice block at his sleigh, knocking both Koopa Klaus and Santa out of it. Holding on to Santa with one hand, Koopa Klaus used an empty sack as a parachute and ran off with Santa upon hitting the ground.
Mario's group then began to chase Koopa Klaus across the North Pole. Using his sack as a windsail, Koopa Klaus used the North Pole's strong winds to blow him and Santa away. Mario and Luigi and attempted to stop him by throwing snowballs in his direction, but Koopa Klaus decided to catch the snowballs in his sack, which he then hurled back at the Mario Bros. Koopa Klaus then lured Mario's group onto a frozen pond, where several of his Flurry minions had been stationed. Koopa Klaus ordered the Flurries to attack Mario's group, but they ultimately failed.
Koopa Klaus then dragged Santa into a dark cave and was followed by Mario's group. However, Koopa Klaus managed to remain on the cliff on the other side of the cave, something that Mario's group couldn't accomplish, causing them to go flying off into a snowbank. Not wanting the chase to continue, Koopa Klaus threatened to drop Santa into the icy water at the bottom of the cliff.
Princess Toadstool pleaded to Koopa Klaus against destroying Christmas, but this brought out his rage, and caused him to shout "Christmas is a bah, humkoop!" several times. The echo caused by his voice was so powerful, it triggered an avalanche. Now distracted, Mario used the opportunity to rescue Santa from Koopa Klaus with his plumber's snake. Wanting to escape the avalanche, Koopa Klaus jumped into the icy water and climbed onto a nearby iceberg, moaning about his failed takeover. Turning around in response to a loud roar, Koopa Klaus learned that he was sharing the iceberg with an angry Polar Bear.
Once Mario's group returned Santa to his workshop, they learned that there wasn't enough time to melt the ice that Koopa Klaus had caused, and that Santa was left with no choice but to cancel Christmas. Not wanting Santa to be unable to deliver any presents, Toad gave up his early Christmas gift so that he would have at least one gift to give someone. The warmth of Toad's Christmas spirit was so powerful, that it melted all the ice covering the workshop.
[edit] Appearance
As Koopa Klaus, King Koopa was essentially just wearing a Santa Claus outfit, complete with black boots and a white beard.
[edit] Trivia
- Koopa Klaus' tenancy to utter "Bah, humkoop!" is a reference to Ebenezer Scrooge's infamous catchphrase "Bah, humbug!"
- Koopa Klaus' concept of dressing up as Santa Claus and trying to ruin Christmas is very similar to what the Grinch did in the Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. Coincidentally, both Koopa Klaus and the Grinch are green.
- When Koopa Klaus threatened to drop Santa off the cliff, he spoke much like one of Edward G. Robinson's typical gangster characters.
