The Fuwas are the mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. They make cameo apperances in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games various times and even have their own unlockable bios in the "Gallery" mode. Their names, placed together without repetitions, form the phrase Beijing huanyingni (Chinese for "Beijing welcomes you").
