“Halt! Who goes there? A trespasser! This castle now belongs to us, the "Smithy Gang". It's our first step towards taking over this world! And if it weren't for nosey characters like YOU... We'd practically OWN this world! So let's see you deal with THIS!”
Exor, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Exor is a high-ranking member of the Smithy Gang and the secondary antagonist and boss in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its Nintendo Switch remake. Exor is a giant anthropomorphic sword that is actually composed of four parts: the Left Eye, the Right Eye, the Mouth (which is inexplicably translated as "Neosquid" in the original), and the skull-shaped pommel (named Exor) that controls the entire body. Exor's name is a reference to Excalibur, the sword from the story of King Arthur. Exor is used as a gateway between Mario's world, which is home of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the Weapon World, where Smithy's Factory is located.

The image of Exor impaling Bowser's Keep is one of the primary images used to represent the game. Aside from the world map and Vista Hill, it is on the title screen, the front of the American box art, and the back of the Japanese box art.

The scene where Exor crashes into Bowser's Keep, seen in promotional artwork

Exor, on its descent to Bowser's Keep, shatters the Star Road, breaking off seven Star Pieces, thus eliminating the power of wishes from the world. Exor crashes into Bowser's Keep, sending Mario, Bowser, and Princess Peach (who were battling in the castle) flying to other regions of the world. The keep is occupied by the Smithy Gang and is used as Smithy's base of operations in Mario's world.

Mario returns to Bowser's Keep in an attempt to find Peach, only to meet Exor. Exor claims the keep in the name of the Smithy Gang and destroys the bridge linking Bowser's Keep to the rest of the world, requiring Mario to find another way in.

Eventually, after collecting six Star Pieces, Mario returns to Bowser's Keep via a bus driver from Nimbus Land. After defeating Boomer, Mario and his allies are brought to the roof of the castle, where they engage Exor. In battle, the pommel of the sword (actually called Exor) must be defeated in order to win, but it cannot be damaged until at least one eye has been disabled. In a couple of turns, the eye enables itself again, protecting the pommel completely once again. Following its defeat, Exor inhales Mario and his allies, transporting them to Smithy's world.

After Smithy is defeated, Exor disintegrates.

It's named after the legendary sword Excalibur. But since swords don't exist in Mario's world, there's no way for Mario to get the reference.

Just as there are dominant hands, there are dominant eyes too. This Right Eye has more HP than the Left Eye, so Exor's dominant eye must be the right one.

Trivia[edit]

  • In a television commercial promoting the American release of the game, this character was erroneously referred to as "Smithy the Sword," probably also suggesting that it was the main antagonist of the game.
  • Exor is the only Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars boss (aside from the Speardovich clones) that is not immune to Geno Whirl's ability to deal 9,999 damage if executed properly. This is also true in the remake.
  • Exor is one of only four bosses for which the heroes leave the screen without actually posing when the victory screen comes up, the others being the Axem Rangers/The Blade, Boomer, and Knife Guy/Grate Guy.
  • Exor's Monster List description suggests that Exor's right eye is dominant, as it has more health than the left eye.
  • Exor's Monster List description also implies that, in Mario World, no sword exists. However, this is false, as characters such as Prince Peasley, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon's knight armors, Cortez, and many others are seen carrying and using swords.
  • In the Nintendo Puzzle Collection version of Yoshi's Cookie, on the world map, a sword that resembles Exor is seen sticking out of Bowser's Castle.
