Dinohattan

Dinohattan is the Super Mario Bros. movie's equivalent to the Mushroom Kingdom. However it differs drastically from its video-game counterpart. Dinohattan was created when a meteorite hit the planet Earth and created another dimension. While many dinosaurs were killed due to the initial impact, some others survived on in the alternate dimension. Once there, they evolved into humanoid beings, yet maintained some reptilian traits as well as temperament.

Except for the city of Dinohattan, the entire geography of this parallel earth is mostly desert. The entire city has been run down due to crime created from President Koopa's lack of social services. The previous ruler, the Mushroom King with the name "King Bowser", had been de-evolved by Koopa into a thick web of fungus. This fungus maintained some level of intelligence and spread across the city, spying on day-to-day developments in hopes of restoring the Kingdom to its former glory.

[edit] Inhabitants
The inhabitants of Dinohattan are human-looking beings that evolved from dinosaurs, with varying levels of reptilian traits remaining among some modern descendants.
Regular dinosaurs also appear in the city, yet are treated as pets or wild animals. Other animals, such as lizards and Spinys, exist and are seen as food sources to the humanoid dinosaurs.

Dinohattan was originally ruled by King Bowser and his unnamed wife. However, Koopa, a military officer who had evolved from a Tyrannosaurus Rex, staged a coup and turned the King into fungus with his De-Evolution machine. He also sought to conquer the parallel world, Earth, by claiming possession of a fragment of the meteorite that had destroyed the dinosaurs in the distant past. However, Daisy's mother fled to Earth with the fragment and her unborn baby, Princess Daisy, to keep them away from Koopa. When she attempts to return to her dimention, she is attacked by Koopa and killed when the tunnel over them collapses.
With the king and queen gone, Koopa sets up a dictatorship in the guise of a democracy with him as "President". He has maintained this position for twenty years through false open elections and a secret police-force made-up of de-evolved Goombas that remove political dissenters from the public eye. After witnessing New York City while in pursuit of Daisy's mother and the meteorite shard, Koopa became inspired to recreate the modern metropolis in his own world. However, he was never quite able to accomplish it and only created a grotesque dystopia[1], deepening his desire to rule Earth instead. While Koopa maintained that he only sought to return his people to their rightful rule over their original dimension, it can be inferred from his dialogue that he only wanted Earth for himself.
Eventually Koopa is overthrown, King Bowser is restored to his proper form and duties as king along with Princess Daisy.

- The name Dinohattan is a portmanteau of the words Dinosaur and Manhattan, which is a borough of New York City.
- At one point, King Koopa refers to Dinohattan as "this Mushroom Kingdom" in a loathing manner, a reference to the video game term.
